SEO Do MetaTags Still Matter?

On page search engine optimization can help to make your site more search engine friendly but do meta tags still carry any weight with the search engines?

Meta tags are tags that tell the search engines what your site is about and these are not tags that you’ll see when you look at any one site.

But…

They do carry some weight and can help your site get indexed and ranked. As a matter of fact when you look at sites that are listed in the search engines you’ll see the description clearly displayed.

If you have your keywords in the description this can help your site to rank well. Now the keywords meta tag has been questioned simply because not too long ago black hatters were stuffing tons of keywords into the keyword meta tag.

As a result Google stopped paying so much attention to these and so some people might tell you not to worry about putting any keywords in there, but I usually put between 5 or 6 keywords just in case.

Wordpress blogs make dealing with meta tags easy because you don’t have to remember what the code looks like to add them into your site, but if you build static sites here are some you can pop into your site…

<head>
<title> </title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=us-ascii" />
<meta name="http://www.yoursite.com" content="&lt;meta name=">
<meta name="keywords" content="your keyword, another keyword">
<meta name="copyright" content="Copyright &#169; 2009 Yoursite.com">
<meta name="distribution" content="worldwide">
<meta name="rating" content="General">
<meta name="resource-type" content="document">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="10 days">
<meta name="ROBOTS" content="ALL">
