There’s no question about it, if you want to get lots of traffic, you need to get as many backlinks as possible pointing to your site, but does it matter where they come from?
Getting backlinks will always continue to be an issue of importance especially when the search engines are prone to change their algorithms at a moments notice.
Every backlink that you get pointing to your website is good except for links from:
Porn sites
Gambling sites
Sites containing violence or other objectionable content
These sites are considered “bad neighborhoods” and can hurt your rankings.
However it is important to understand what it is the search engines are trying to accomplish as far as delivering the best search results to their customers.
If you are operating a website that is about automotive repair and a website focused on baby accessories is linking back to you, what are the chances that visitors from the baby site are going to purchase anything from your automotive site?
That’s not to say that the occasional visitor might not stick around for awhile, but you can’t rest your hopes on a steady income online from a few occasional visitors.
Depending on the page rank of the site linking to you, if the page rank is higher than yours, the linking site may pass some page rank to your site but your site won’t be adversely affected. However…
Page rank doesn’t make money, targeted visitors who find your site from other sites related to yours are far more likely to convert into dollars for you than having a bunch of backlinks from non related sites.
